Negotiation? Art? Science? Manipulation? or Justice?

Negotiation?

Wikipedia, defines Negotiation thus:

“Negotiation is a dialogue intended to resolve disputes, to produce an agreement upon courses of action, to bargain for individual or collective advantage, or to craft outcomes to satisfy various interests. It is the primary method of alternative dispute resolution.
Negotiation occurs in business, non-profit organizations, government branches, legal proceedings, among nations and in personal situations such as marriage, divorce, parenting, and everyday life. The study of the subject is called negotiation theory. Professional negotiators are often specialized, such as union negotiators, leverage buyout negotiators, peace negotiators, hostage negotiators, or may work under other titles, such as diplomats, legislators or brokers.”

It seems to me therefore that Negotiation is a pretty much vital skill both commercially and socially and yet we Brits and I’m sure many others are really bad at doing it and many of us know that. Despite this it isn’t taught in school or University in the main and even on MBA and DMS courses not in any depth that I can tell. Is is any wonder therefore that in many cases we end up with unsatisfactory outcomes in our dealings with each other. I recognise many of these and to be honest recognise that over the years some have disadvantaged me by using such tactics. I now feel that if only I’d known then …… but that normally only comes with age and experience.

Working with an organisation like the Rainmakers that offers training in this area I am amazed at how all pervasive negotiation really is and am rapidly coming to the conclusion that training is beneficial if not vital for most of us.

 Wikipedia continues:-

“Some teachers outline negotiating archetypes such as the Wise well connected Sages,
the Wiley old foxes, the Predators and Thugs, who usurp the lions share through sheer tyranny and force, the obstinate “petit tyrant”, the big deal wannabee, the systemic bureaucrat with all the rules and no idea, and then there are the unfortunate and clearly oblivious “prey”, the victims of “circumstance”.
Others outline a variety of tactics ranging from negotiation hypnosis, to a straight forward presentation of demands or setting of preconditions to more deceptive approaches such as cherry picking. Intimidation and salami tactics may also play a part in swaying the outcome of negotiations.
Another negotiation tactic is bad guy/good guy. Bad guy/good guy tactic is when one negotiator acts as a bad guy by using anger and threats. The other negotiator acts as a good guy by being considerate and understanding. The good guy blames the bad guy for all the difficulties while trying to get concessions and agreement from the opponent.”

In my own research I found where organisations have even built special rooms to unbalance opponents in negotiations!

Equally many equate “haggling” wth “negotiation” IMHO not the same thing at all and I dislike haggling immensely.

In the overall scheme of things we need to consider the following summation; negotiation is a contest for the best deal and there is always someone who has an advantage.

At the end of the day you get what you negotiate not what you deserve and as to ones “rights” ……….!!

Moving on from the “if only” to the “What next” I’ve just posted a Marketplace Advert and Event scheduled for 22nd & 23rd March for “Negotiation Unplugged” which will take those who really need the skills of a negotiation specialist to apply to their daily life to “specialist” level.

Who will join me?

How to get Great Performance in a Recession – A Rainmakers Dialogue

We’ve had a bit if an interesting time at the office lately.  All of us have had news that knocked us back on our heels a bit and was, I have to say, a bit challenging.  Out of this came a desire to “Make a Difference” and in my case leave a bit if a legacy and in theirs make a difference to those they can so easily identify with.

Some of our rainmaker speakers have been pushing the idea of “Philanthropic Capitalism” and “Making a Difference” whilst improving both personal and business performance and so we decided to get with the programme and do something positive for everybody.

We are starting to generate money for charity and in time may even get as far as setting up a foundation but for now raising money for the less fortunate is on the agenda.

We realised that post Haiti and other disasters, whilst there is medical help and help to rebuild basic infrastructures, there is little or no help for the inhabitants to rebuild and restart their businesses or in many cases find new business to do to replace that destroyed by the disaster.  We are going to do something positive about that – we know about speakers, rainmakers and events so that’s what we will use to generate funds.

Our initial Event will benefit ‘Action Aid’ as we realise that the thing is to get the funds flowing even if we need to improve targeting later.

The inaugural event will be held in the evening in the City of London, and will feature a discussion between two of our Rainmakers – Gary Sage and Gordon Lovell-Read.

Given that modern businesses, in the UK at least, find themselves in a difficult and challenging strategic environment at present, and might like a different view of what is possible our Rainmakers, Gary and Gordon, will be hosting the Event:

How to get Great Performance in a Recession – A Rainmakers Dialogue

(Intermediate and Advanced Level!)

They will be discussing themes such as

The Economy – Where do We go from Here?

Bonus Culture – Good, Banned or Evil?

Interim Management and Part Time workers – What’s next?

The New Economy – Freeze, Flee or Fight?

The audience will also be invited to submit questions

The event will run from about 18:00 to 21:00 on a Wednesday evening at a venue in the City with an opportunity to Network before the speakers

Rainmaker Days – A different approach?

Rainmaker Days are a new concept from Erudyte following feed back from their clients and the clients from their The Speakers Company subsidiary.

What was said was that numerous organisations, whilst they enjoyed and learned from speakers who were at the top of their industries, wanted more from the speaker and a closer engagement with the speakers’ experience and expertise to benefit their companies.

Given that that engagement could be consultancy, training, mentoring, tutoring, brain dumping with the CEO or board or other activities it is very hard to describe the offering succinctly.  Equally few board members will admit that their skills and knowledge could be improved on especially within their organisations even when things are not going that well.  Reasons can always be found for why things are as they are but it takes foresight not to mention bravery to ask if things could be (even) better and what it would take to bring that about.

For us one obvious route is to engage with someone who has “been there, done that, had the T shirt” and proved it time and time again on an international stage.
As an executive you might not want to admit that you had been talking with such a person but if that discussion could be held discreetly, for example under The Chatham House Rule, might great benefits not be possible?

Lets face it your HR or Training department are hardly going to suggest to the boss that he needed upskilling or advice  even if they knew what those skills looked like.

What came out of all this was the realisation that if we selected some of our brightest and best – “The Rainmakers” and allowed them to host a small group (max 16) for a day, (with refreshments of course to keep brains up to speed) in a discreet and secure environment at a fraction of the normal price as an way of engaging with a rainmaker to experience both the process and quality, whether or not it lead to something more long term, this could be an attractive idea.

So was born the “Rainmaker Day” the next one is on 4th February 2010 and the thought leader that day is Gordon Lovell Read.  We have launched a new Rainmaker site (www.rainmakerscompany.com) where you can not only see more details about the Rainmakers but read their thoughts and blogs (feel free to respond or contribute) as well as news feeds relevant to the C-Suite and Boards.

If this sounds too good to miss one can book online at www.erudyte.eventbrite.com or Telephone Chris at Erudyte on 0845 094 1044.
